System requirements

Playto runs on Windows and Linux. What you can use differs a little by OS, and on Linux by desktop. This page is kept up to date as features reach Linux. Linux details by desktop: Linux.

  • The translation model comes bundled. Language pairs that include Danish, Finnish, Hungarian, Norwegian, Romanian or Swedish need a separate model download (2–6 GB).
  • The local AI uses GPU VRAM on top of your game (typically 2–4 GB). Keep your GPU driver up to date; if CUDA isn't available, Vulkan and the CPU are used instead.
  • Game audio needs Windows 10 version 2004 or later.

Linux

MinimumRecommended
OS64-bit Linux with glibc 2.39 or later: Ubuntu 24.04, Linux Mint 22, Fedora 40, a current Arch, or newer

  • Standard edition only. Playto Lite has no Linux version. If you own Playto on Steam, the Linux version comes at no extra cost.
  • Report problems through Contact us or Send Error Report in the app; reports from Linux include Linux diagnostic details automatically.
  • WebKitGTK and the other libraries Playto needs come bundled. If a system library is still missing, Playto names it and shows the install command for your distribution.
  • Your desktop needs its xdg-desktop-portal backend (xdg-desktop-portal-kde on KDE, xdg-desktop-portal-gnome on GNOME). Both desktops install it by default.
  • Steam Deck is not supported. In Game Mode neither capture nor the overlay works; Desktop Mode has not been tested.

Not on Linux yet

Capturing the game, reading the text, translating it and showing it on the overlay work on Linux. These features are Windows-only for now:

  • Cursor Follow — Not on Linux yet. On GNOME (Wayland) it is not possible: GNOME does not give apps the mouse position.
  • Resident mode
  • Game audio
  • Read aloud in Chinese, and the VOICEVOX Japanese voice pack — English, Japanese, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese are read aloud on Linux too (Japanese with the standard voice).
  • Mouse shortcuts — Wayland does not let apps read mouse buttons outside their own window. On X11 sessions they are not on Linux yet.
  • Stopping when the game closes
  • Reading Vietnamese text — Linux reads text with PP-OCR, which has no Vietnamese model. The OCR engines that come with Windows are not available on Linux.
  • NVIDIA CUDA — On Linux the local model runs on Vulkan or the CPU.
