Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 17, 2026

Playto is a language learning tool for PC gamers, developed by an independent developer. This policy explains how Playto handles your data.

1. Data that stays on your device

All core functionality runs locally on your machine. The following data is created and stored only on your device — it is never transmitted to us or any third party:

  • Your personal dictionary (saved words, sentences, translations)
  • Learning progress (quiz results, spaced repetition state, streaks)
  • Application settings and game profiles
  • Screen captures used for text recognition (processed in memory only, not persistently saved by Playto)

We have no access to this data. If you uninstall Playto, this data is deleted with it.

2. Cloud translation API (opt-in only)

By default, Playto translates text using AI models running locally on your machine. No internet connection is required.

If you choose to use a cloud translation API (such as Google Gemini or OpenAI), the on-screen text captured from your game is sent to that provider for translation. This is disabled by default and only activates when you manually configure an API key in Settings.

Each cloud provider's own privacy policy governs how they handle that data.

3. AI model downloads

Playto downloads open-source AI models (for text recognition, translation, and text-to-speech) from external hosting services such as Hugging Face. These are one-way downloads — model files are retrieved to your device, but no personal data is sent to the hosting provider.

Standard connection metadata (such as your IP address) is visible to the hosting provider during the download, as with any file downloaded from the internet. No additional information is transmitted.

4. Session sharing and user-generated content

Playto provides tools to create session share cards that may include game screenshots. When you choose to share a card (e.g., to X/Twitter or save to your device), the image is sent directly from your device to the platform you selected. Playto does not upload shared images to our servers.

The privacy policy of the platform you share to (e.g., X/Twitter) governs how they handle the shared content.

Game screenshots may be subject to the game publisher's content usage policies. It is your responsibility to verify that sharing screenshots of a specific game complies with that game's terms. Playto provides the sharing mechanism but does not grant rights to third-party game content.

5. Anonymous telemetry (opt-in)

Playto may collect anonymous, aggregated usage statistics to improve the product. This includes:

  • Game vocabulary difficulty statistics (which words appear in which games)
  • Hardware and engine profiles (GPU, RAM, OS — for performance optimization)
  • Feature usage patterns (which features are used, how often)
  • Translation quality metrics (OCR accuracy statistics)
  • Learning outcome statistics (average vocabulary growth rates)

This data contains no personal identifiers. The collected data does not include usernames, email addresses, device IDs, or content you typed or saw in games. IP addresses used to deliver telemetry requests are not stored alongside the collected data and are not used to identify individual users.

Because no personal data is collected, individual data access or deletion requests are not applicable — there is no way to associate the anonymous statistics with a specific person.

You can disable telemetry at any time in Settings. When telemetry is off, no data is transmitted.

6. Third-party services

  • Steam (Valve Corporation) — Playto is distributed through Steam. Valve collects data according to their own privacy policy (e.g., playtime, purchase history). We do not receive personal data from Valve.
  • Cloud API providers — Only when you opt in (see Section 2). Your chosen provider's privacy policy applies.

7. Children's privacy

Playto is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any data from children under 13.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as Playto develops. Significant changes will be communicated through the application or our Steam store page. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
