Playto PLAYTO / JLPT Game Vocabulary

Dataset

Japanese game vocabulary by JLPT level

Most JLPT word lists tell you which words are common in Japanese. This one tells you which words are common in games — because it is built from the words real players actually looked up and saved while playing real games in Japanese.

That difference matters more than it sounds. Games have their own frequency order, and it disagrees with the textbook order in both directions: everyday classroom words that barely appear on a game screen, and "advanced" N1 words that every RPG hands you in the first ten minutes.

Games don't follow the textbook order

Scroll to the bottom of this page and look at the N1 table — the level the JLPT reserves for words like newspaper editorials use. In our data it contains (the rough first-person half of all game protagonists use), 所持 (the "items held" label), and 装備 (equip). These are among the most frequent words on any RPG screen.

A learner who studies from textbooks meets those words after years. A learner who plays meets them on day one, sees them hundreds of times, and knows them cold long before "N1" would suggest. The reverse is also true: classroom staples like 教室 survive in this list mostly because school-setting games exist at all.

The practical conclusion: if games are your input, use a list built from games. The N5 and N4 tables below are the highest-value study targets — they cover the dialogue in nearly every genre — and the N3 table is where interface Japanese lives.

How this dataset is made

Playto is a screen-translation overlay for playing games in another language. When a player looks a word up, saves it to their wordbook, or reviews it later, that interaction — with opt-in anonymous statistics enabled — becomes a signal that the word mattered on a real game screen.

Before anything is published here, the data passes through aggregation rules: a word must have been met in at least two different games and on at least two different user-days; only dictionary-verified words are counted, so names and misreads are excluded; and our own development playtime is removed entirely. The result is a cross-game aggregate — no individual player's word list, and no individual game's vocabulary, can be read out of it. The "games" column shows how many different games each word was met in. Details are in our privacy policy.

N5 — the beginner core, everywhere

The first words any course teaches are also the words that carry game dialogue in every genre. If you know kana and this list, a surprising amount of any Japanese screen already means something.

N4 — where the story starts

Feelings, resolve, danger: this is the layer where game writing stops being labels and starts being narrative. 心, 夢, 逃げる and 世界 do a lot of work in almost every plot.

N3 — where the menus join in

This is where interface Japanese lives. 保存, 決定, 選択 and 回復 are the words on the buttons — graded intermediate by the JLPT, met in the first five minutes by anyone who opens a menu.

N2 — still accumulating

The thinnest slice of the dataset so far. N2 vocabulary certainly appears in games, but few of those words have crossed our publication threshold yet — this section will grow with future updates.

N1 — the words games teach first

The most striking finding in the data. 俺 is how half of all game protagonists say I. 所持 and 装備 sit in every RPG menu. The JLPT files all three under its hardest level, and games hand them to you on day one.

What to do with this list

A frequency list is a map, not a method. If you want the method — which game to pick first, how to make the screen readable, and how to keep the words you meet — start with how to learn Japanese with video games.

If you want more material in this shape, the learn hub has themed word lists pulled from game screens, and the game difficulty breakdowns grade real screenshots of specific games by JLPT level, so you can check whether a game is above your level before committing thirty hours to it. Not sure which table is your frontier? The game Japanese quiz places you in about two minutes.

And if you want your own version of this list — the words you personally met, in the games you personally play — that is literally what Playto's wordbook is. Every word on this page got here because someone looked it up mid-game and decided it was worth keeping.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this word list come from?

From real play. Playto shows a dictionary reading of the words on a game screen, and players can look words up, save them, and review them later. With opt-in anonymous statistics enabled, each of those interactions counts toward this dataset. We publish a word only when it was met in at least two different games by at least two different user-days, so no single player's word list is ever exposed and no single game's vocabulary is reconstructed.

Why are common game words like 装備 listed as JLPT N1?

Because the JLPT grades words by frequency in general Japanese — newspapers, conversation, textbooks — not in games. 装備 (equipment) is rare in a newspaper and constant in an RPG menu. That mismatch is the point of this page: if you learn from games, your effective vocabulary order is different from the textbook order, and some 'advanced' words will be among the first you master.

Why is the N2 section so small?

The dataset only publishes words that clear an aggregation threshold (2+ games, 2+ user-days), and N2 vocabulary hasn't accumulated enough cross-game evidence yet. The page is regenerated from the live dataset, so sections grow as more players and more games feed in.

How often is this page updated?

The tables are generated directly from the dataset, not written by hand. We refresh the export periodically and the last-updated date at the top of the page reflects the current data snapshot.

Build your own list from the games you play

Playto puts a reading aid over any Windows game, lets you look up and save words as you play, and reviews them with you afterwards. The free version is enough to see whether it fits how you learn.
