Japanese games translated into English

The order worth checking is cheap first, tools last. Look for a hidden English mode in the options, then for a fan translation patch, then for a text hooker if the game is the kind that has hook scripts (visual novels and 2D adventures mostly). When none of those exist, which is the normal case for a game that came out last month, a screen translator reads the rendered text of the game window and shows the meaning on top of it. If the reason you are here is that you would rather read the Japanese than wait, the games with an English version above are the gentler start: play with Japanese voice and English text, then switch the text to Japanese once the vocabulary starts to repeat. Steam's US storefront is swept for recent releases that support Japanese, so everything here can actually be bought from a Western account; Japan-locked titles never appear, which keeps the Japanese-only list to games you could play tonight. Each game's language table is then read from Steam's own data. Steam does not record where a studio is based, so a game is kept as Japanese-made when its developer or publisher is a known Japanese studio, its website is a .jp domain, its voices are Japanese while English is text-only, or it has Japanese and no English at all. Western games with a Japanese localisation are dropped, and a few Japanese indies without voices may be missed.
