Game Audio (beta)

Game Audio beta

Voiced lines leave no text behind when the game has no subtitles. With Game audio on, Playto listens to the game’s sound, turns spoken lines into text, and translates them just like text on screen.

Standard feature — shown locked in Lite.

When it helps

  • Voiced cutscenes and characters that talk without subtitles.
  • Lines spoken during combat or exploration, while no text box is on screen.
  • Practising listening: read what you just heard in the language you are learning, next to its translation.

Turning it on

  1. On the start screen, turn on Game audio (beta). It is also a row on the resident bar, so you can switch it mid-game.
  2. The first time, Playto downloads the listening model. After that it starts right away.
  3. Play as usual. Playto listens in the language you are learning (the From language).

Game audio is set per game, so select the game on Home first.

Where the lines show up

Spoken lines are collected in the Game audio tab of the Log, kept apart from the Screen text tab. The dialogue you heard becomes text you can read back after the scene has passed, and save words from like any other line.

Standard or high accuracy

The Speech recognition setting in Settings › Capture picks how the audio is turned into text:

  • Standard (CPU) — the default. Works on any PC and adds some CPU load while you play.
  • High accuracy (GPU) — noticeably fewer mistakes. Needs an NVIDIA GPU, a 1.5 GB download and about 1.5 GB of video memory. Playto uses Standard until the download finishes.

When it doesn’t work well

  • In scenes with loud sound effects or music, short lines can come out broken up. Check the Game audio tab to see exactly what was heard.
  • The performance check in Playto measures on-screen text only. It doesn’t cover Game audio.
  • This feature is in beta. Reports of games where it struggles are welcome on Discord.
