Playto's free demo is on itch.io

2 min read

Playto’s free demo is now available on itch.io. If itch is where you find your games, you no longer need to leave it to try the tool that lets you play them in their original language.

What the demo is

The demo is Playto’s free edition: the core translation experience, working end to end. Point it at a game on your screen, and it reads the text, shows you what it means as an overlay, and lets you save the words you want to keep for review. No account, and translation runs locally on your PC.

Why itch.io is a good place to meet Playto

itch.io is full of games that will never be translated — doujin games, indie visual novels, small experimental projects, many of them browser-run. That’s exactly the situation Playto was built for: instead of waiting for a localization that isn’t coming, you read the game as it is, with meanings one glance away.

And because so many itch games run in the browser or as small standalone downloads, the loop is short: find a game, open the demo, start reading. For browser-run games specifically, here’s the step-by-step guide.

Playto is a learning tool at heart, so the words you meet don’t just scroll past — save the ones that catch your eye and they land in a word book with a review schedule. The game you picked up on a whim becomes vocabulary you keep.

Demo vs. the full version

The demo corresponds to Playto’s free tier. The paid Standard edition, available on Steam, unlocks the full toolset on top of it — see the Steam page for the current comparison and pricing.

If you try the demo and it clicks, everything you’d expect carries over conceptually: the same capture modes, the same overlay, the same learning loop, with the Standard edition removing the limits.
